  • Why Locksmiths are Superior than Dealerships for Car Key Replacement

    Posted on July 18th, 2017 0 Comments

We don’t need to explain how car keys are an essential item for any vehicle owner. If you lose or misplace your car keys, you simply won’t be able to enjoy the use of your car! The majority of vehicle owners don’t have spare keys, which can make a situation where keys can’t be found immensely stressful. If this situation occurs to you, you’ll need to get replacement car keys – and you’ll also need to get replacement keys if your existing keys are broken or stolen. You have two options for replacement of automotive keys; you can go to a car dealership, or you can go to a licensed locksmith like Chicago Locksmiths. Make sure to consider these factors before you make your choice.

    Cost

Automobile dealerships are tons more expensive for car key replacement compared to the hiring of an automotive locksmith The cost of replacing keys from a dealer runs up to two or three times more than the price of a locksmith. If you want to save money when replacing your car keys, make sure to go to a locksmith over an automotive dealer. Just think that the money you’re saving can be used for other vehicle expenses, like gas or potential repairs.

    Time

Automotive locksmiths will save you time based on going to a dealership. Locksmiths can provide you a new set of keys instantly or within hours. A dealership might take up to one or two weeks to get you a new pair of keys, as they need to order them from the manufacturer rather than making them on site.

    Ease

It’s way more convenient to hire a locksmith. When you go to an automobile dealership, you will need to bring your driving permit, automobile identification number, license, car registration, and potentially more documents. Car dealers usually won’t make you new keys unless you have all these documents. However, automotive locksmiths don’t have the same requirements, making it a much faster and more easy service.

    On the spot emergency service

You never plan to misplace, break, or lose your car keys. And when you do, you want the situation remedied as soon as humanly possible. That’s why you shouldn’t waste your time trying to find, contact, and travel, car in tow, to the nearest automobile dealership. If you call a licensed locksmith, they will come directly to your location – and we at Chicago Locksmiths are available 24/7, 365 for you.

  • When Keys get stuck in car ignition

    Posted on January 30th, 2017 0 Comments

There’s many reasons that car keys sometimes get stuck inside the ignition of the vehicle. If it occurs constantly, it’s most likely a structural issue with the ignition switch itself. There’s a large chance that there’s some sort of wire or button inside the structure that houses the ignition mechanism that’s misaligned, preventing the key from turning to the fully disengaged position where it can be removed. This counts as a full jam in the device – but if you jiggle the key around or lightly hit the steering column, the key can be released.  Here’s Chicago Locksmith’s automobile expert’s guide to stuck car keys.

    Locked Steering Wheels

There’s other situations where there’s no inner structural malfunctions, but the steering wheel itself is locked in a closed position. In these situations, you just need to slightly rotate it left or right to help release the key. Another tactic to implement is to check to see which direction the car’s wheels are turned to, and turning the steering wheel in the other direction. When cars get parked with their wheels facing opposite directions, it can put great pressure on the steering wheel making it jam. When you release it with this method, there’s a loud click, signaling that the ignition is freed up.

    Manual Removal

You might be trying to move your key when it breaks off inside the car ignition. Try to use pliers to manually yank out the part of the key that you have access to. If you don’t see it, try applying a small amount of superglue to the head of the key that broke off, stick it inside so it can touch the part that broke it off, wait a few minutes, and pull it out. REMEMBER: only use a small amount of superglue, as if it get’s into the mechanism it can break it.

If the key is STILL stuck, it’s probably due to a shifter mechanism malfunction. In this situation you will need the help of a professional. Call a licensed car repair service as soon as possible, as these malfunctions can cause airbags to suddenly be deployed, which can be quite dangerous.

  • What is a VIN number?

    Posted on May 23rd, 2016 0 Comments

    What is a VIN number

Vehicle Identification Numbers are unique code combinations given to vehicles when they are manufactured. This code contains the most important identifying details about the car  This code cannot be changed, and remains active throughout the car’s life. Consider it as your car’s DNA.

VIN numbers are made up of a serial code of 17 characters. They started being used in 1954, and different manufacturers used different formats of the code until 1981, when the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the United States standardized the use of these codes. This standard excludes the use of letters like: “Q, w, o, O, i, and I” from being used as they can all be easily confused with being the numbers 0 or 1.

    World Manufacturer Identifier Numbers

The first three symbols of the VIN number determine the WMI (world manufacturer identifier,) showing which manufacturer made your car. The first character of the WMI identifies the area where the vehicle was made. The next 4 characters provide information about the vehicle type, the model, and the body style.

    Uses of VIN Numbers

VIN numbers are incredibly helpful if you want to buy a used car. You can use the car’s VIN number to check its history report, and whether it has sustained any damage in accidents or has insurance that covers it. VIN numbers also help identify stolen cars, or specific parts if you need to have your car repaired, or your car keys copied.

  • National Burglary Statistics

    Posted on March 3rd, 2016 0 Comments

What to do in a burglary

If you’re at all concerned about the likelihood of a burglar breaking into your home, this article is for you. The fact is that the United States is the world’s leader in burglaries – a burglary happens every 15 seconds, meaning 4 do every minute. While you’re working on your home security, it’s smart to think about these statistics – you might be surprised.

    Front Door Vulnerability

Almost thirty-three percent of burglars illegally enter a home through it’s front door. If your home has an old wood door – a hollow door of any type, you must replace it with a solid wood or metal reinforced door. Hollow doors are notoriously flimsy – any burglar with slight leg strength could kick one in. Additionally, activate your home security system each time that you enter or leave your home – and consider getting genuine, or deterrent security cameras, as well as outdoor motion lighting.

    Repeat Offenses

Burglars sometimes try entering homes more than one time – think about it, they’ve been inside already, so they know the layout, and might have spotted areas with expensive belongings that they didn’t have the time to access the first time they broke in. If you find yourself the victim of a burglary or break-in, make sure to contact a home security service as soon as possible.

    Brute Strength

Almost sixty percent of home invasions are accomplished through forced entry – thirty percent of them are accomplished through simply entering an unlocked door or window, with no need for force.

It Doesn’t Matter if Someone is Home

28% of burglaries occur when someone is inside the house – and unfortunately, household members experience personal violence in 7% of burglaries.

    Alarm Systems are Great Deterrents

The majority of burglars attempt to figure out if a home has an attached alarm system before trying to break in – and the majority of convicted home-invaders admit to avoiding homes with visible security systems. The majority of burglars will leave the home immediately if an alarm sounds.

    Wireless Benefits

Almost twenty-five percent of home invasions involve the cutting of alarm or telephone wires before the break-in is enacted. Wireless home security systems are more secure, because there’s no wires that can be cut. This service is offered by many of the leading home security agencies, and won’t burn a hole in your wallet.

    Not many Burglaries are Solved

Only around 13% of burglaries are solved by police – with an even smaller chance of the stolen belongings being recovered or returned.

    Significant Losses aren’t Uncommon

In a study conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the average monetary loss suffered by households or businesses in burglaries is around 2,185 dollars – and if you factor in the police/investigation costs, it can be almost 20,000.. This amount is much more than the average cost of a home security system – which of course, also doesn’t come with the emotional expense associated with a break-in. Additionally, most home insurance companies offer discounts if a home security system is installed.

  • How to find the right Locksmith

    Posted on September 25th, 2015 0 Comments

best locksmithChicago is a huge, sprawling city – and there’s lots of individuals who profess to be locksmiths. Finding a locksmith is a task often undertaken spur of the moment, and in a bit of a panic. Most individuals only think about finding a locksmith when they have a broken key or emergency lockout and need immediate assistance. To avoid choosing a shoddy or unprofessional locksmith that overcharges you for unimpressive work, follow the following steps on this checklist. It will help you find a reliable locksmith who’ll provide professional service and a good price.

    Versatility and Experience

A good locksmith should be able to do any sort of job that relates to locks. Always check the locksmith’s website or call to make sure they can provide you the service you need – and reading a review couldn’t hurt. An experienced locksmith will ensure that their work is done correctly and efficiently. By employing a locksmith with limited training, you risk damaging your door.

    Official License

Any good locksmith is licensed and officially insured – even if it is not required by their state. Insurance ensures that you will receive compensation if any of your property is damaged or incorrectly fixed – as opposed to a non-insured locksmith who will likely decide to walk away from their shoddy job.

    Mobile Service

A quality locksmith will either have a local physical location or a mobile service that can come to you at any hour of the day. This way you’re waiting time (along with any travel cost that may factor into your bill) will be minimal.

    Accountability and Trustworthiness

Good locksmiths provide their customers with an upfront written estimate that factors in all labor operations involved including travel and late night charges. Never use a locksmith that won’t provide a written estimate – as it is likely that they are attempting to unfairly tack on extra fees and up charges. Make sure that your locksmith company does a criminal background check on their employees – as well as making sure that your locksmith’s vehicle is well signed (scam locksmiths often use unmarked vehicles.)

Finding the right locksmith for you pays off in spades. Chicago Locksmiths offers the highest quality service in the Chicago area for the lowest price. They are fully licensed and all their work is guaranteed to satisfy. Give us a call.

  • The Evolution of Mul-T-Lock

    Posted on January 9th, 2015 0 Comments

    MulTlocks

Mul-T-Lock was founded by Moshe Dolev and Avraham Bahry In 1973. They entered the market with a 4-way multipoint lock; and, it made such an impact that soon Mul-T-Lock products were carried in the highest-security locksmith stores. Moshe Dolev and Avraham Bahry and the Mul-T-Lock brand became the emblem of the high-security market and in 41 years, that hasn’t changed.

    Sticking to innovation

Moshe Dolev and Avraham Bahry built their first lock on an innovative idea. To remain leaders of an evolving market, both Moshe Dolev and Avraham Bahry needed to equip the Mul-T-Lock brand with fresh ideas and solutions to achieve new levels of security and set new standards and grades for new and existing products on the market. This included taking mechanical cylinders, deadbolts, key fobs, wireless locks and smartphone useable electronics to never before seen results.

    Loyal Partners

Mul-T-Lock uses expert technicians to install and supply their products. Interactive®+, MT5®+ as well as electromechanical CLIQ e-cylinders are imperative to the new security market and take professionals to install and fix if necessary. When loyalty meets security results everyone prospers. The benefit of this helps stores stand behind their product and clients who purchase the product feel as if the investment was worth their time and money. Mul-T-Lock has built a business around loyalty.

    Whats ahead?

With the onset of a heavy push to go digital with security, some users and retailers fear that these advances in security will be lesser accessible to them. For a complete access control panel like the SMARTair®, Mul-T-Lock has erased the worry and concern. In their 41 years, they’ve continued to do one thing incredibly well. And that is supplying information about their products in clear and informative ways. User interfaces with Mul-T-Lock are extraordinarily simple. Don’t fear the wireless.

    Mul-T-Lock is here to stay

Mul-T-Lock USA, Inc. president, Roy Miller recently said that, “For me, and hopefully for our customers, there is a true value in my coming from the locksmith channel. Having been a part of this ever-changing industry for so many years, I’ve always been in a position to understand the specific needs and the unique challenges that our locksmiths encounter, but now I’m in a position to really do something about it. Now I can offer solutions made by a locksmith and for a locksmith; it’s very exciting.”

If there is one thing for certain, it’s that what began with Moshe Dolev and Avraham Bahry is continuing with Roy Miller. The future of technology couldn’t look brighter than it does today. The Mul-T-Lock brand is about to promote one of the most profound evolutions to security. Residential properties and commercial properties are deploying these locks as quick as they can. • Auto Theft in the US

    Posted on December 10th, 2014 0 Comments

    Chicago Locksmiths Auto Theft Blog

Theft is obviously an issue and it can occur anywhere. Most often we publicize the nefarious bank heists, jewelry smuggling or the theft of famous artworks in Hollywood films. A national favorite is the famous theft by “D.B. Cooper” who fled, by parachute, from a plane with $200,000 in 1971. But let’s be reasonable here. Auto theft and home thefts are more likely to happen to grounded everyday citizens. That doesn’t make these thefts any less interesting however. Recently the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) released their analysis of vehicle thefts from 1960 through 2013 and the results were fascinating to say the least. We took the information and thought about its relation to home security. Here’s our lowdown:

    A Numbers Game

The National Insurance Crime Bureau reported that last year 699,594 automotive vehicles were stolen. That details a 58% reduction in auto theft since 1991. In 1991 the theft was 1,661,738! To make sense of these numbers a few things must first be recognized. In the 1990s, the idea of a single vehicle for a family home became displaced. For one reason or another everyone in a household needed a car. As cars populated the roads thieves saw a cash crop. The main reason for this was that production offered cheap vehicles to a consumer market. But to some extent these automobiles are valuable and what one puts inside them even more so. But during that process they skipped some steps. They completely mismanaged auto security. But, its not all their fault, since that time we’ve replaced keys with computers, fingerprint technologies and voice-verification systems. These technologies amplify security.

The decrease in theft percentage from then and now is just wild. That decrease is 437.71%. Some states saw their automotive theft remain the same or change very little, while other states adopted newer security technologies in their vehicles or benefited from other vehicles being safe— becoming something like a Müllerian mimic. So the increase in security helped everyone’s case and auto theft went on the decline.

     Homes Security

We can draw a parallel to home security here. Since home security has been on the rise in consumer interest, especially in those cities with populations greater than 250,000, we’ve seen a steady decline in home invasion and burglary since 1960 as well. Although it might be emotionally painful to have one’s automotive vehicle stolen, think of how much more emotional it might be to have the most secure place in your life compromised. Valuables looted, generations of history taken from you without the slightest trace and more importantly the risk of your life and those around you. Home invasions do happen and unlike the chameleon auto approach, it’s best to adopt a form of property security that matches your security needs.

    Conclusion

Today there are plenty of great solutions for commercial and residential properties that can keep them, their valuables and their persons safe. High-tech auto locks are leading the way. Personalized easy-to-use interfaces have revolutionized all former conceptions of what it means to be secure in today’s evolving word. If you’re concerned with security. Don’t stockpile yourself in to the negative statistics. Go see how you can protect yourself and the community around you by making upgrades to your home as soon as you can.
